Contemporary Witnesses at the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Museum
Volucap’s Immersive Technology Transforms Museum Experience
In an effort to enhance the museum experience and deepen the understanding of historical narratives, Volucap has created volucaps – digital avatars – for an exhibition “Under Coercion: The Work Detachments of Convicts in Hohenschönhausen” at the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Museum. Volucap has captured five contemporary witnesses who formerly worked at the Stasi prison:
Hans-Jochen Scheidler,
Monika Nontschew,
Monika Behrendt,
Wilma Reuß,
Kirsten Esser.
Unlike traditional 2D videos, Volucaps’s volumetric videos provide a unique and engaging way to consume content. Rather than a fixed perspective, these recordings allow viewers to interact and navigate around the scene, thereby intensifying the level of immersion and interactivity.
As the entertainment industry increasingly adopts immersive technologies to retain audience attention, it’s crucial for museums and memorials to keep up with the times. These experiences offer an intimate, immersive perspective of the past.
The exhibit at the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Museum, situated within a preserved kitchen and living area, enables visitors to navigate the 500 sqm space using an AR app developed by ZAUBER. The blend of physical exploration and digital volumetric representations enhances understanding of history.
Visitors can witness history up close, stand alongside it, or observe it from a distance. The accompanying video offers a glimpse into this unique experience.
