“Walking Alone, Text You When I’m Home” is an immersive 360-degree VR documentary created as a project by the Filmuniversity Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, directed by Vincent Abert and produced by Jessi Jesenofsky. The film delves into the unsettling experiences of sexual harassment many women face in their daily lives, from catcalls on the street to unwanted touches in public spaces. It centers on the narrated accounts of a young woman who revisits locations where she felt unsafe, sharing her reflections and inner thoughts about these moments.
Through authentic audio from interviews and animated, abstract visualizations, the film recreates these incidents, shedding light on the traumatic impact of what society often dismisses as minor or harmless encounters. Using the immersive power of VR, the user is placed in the role of an invisible observer, experiencing the uncomfortable proximity of sexually suggestive comments and unsolicited advances, all while grappling with the narrator’s reflections on fear, perception, and societal conditioning.
The performances for this innovative project were captured at the Volucap Studio, using the volumetric technology. The team employed point cloud representations of the actors to seamlessly integrate into a visually striking world of points, adding a layer of abstraction that deepens the emotional engagement.
The experience culminates in a poignant moment where the user is left alone in a dimly lit, remote space, prompting them to reflect on how it feels to occupy such vulnerable positions. By blending powerful storytelling with innovative volumetric capture, this VR documentary invites viewers to explore the complex dynamics of harassment and the emotional toll it takes on its victims.
