TAGESSCHAU 2025

FUTURE OF BROADCASTING

TAGESSCHAU 2025 IN MIXED REALITY

What happens when the program leaves the screen and news can suddenly be experienced in a new way, weather maps hover over your couch and the lunar eclipse takes place in your own living room. To answer this question, the tagesschau took an innovative pioneering role and produced a complete episode of the tagesschau for the first time in mixed reality.

To preserve authenticity, news anchor Linda Zervakis was volumetrically recorded with all natural details. Her captured image, in turn, can therefore not only be placed anywhere, but compared to classic 3D avatars it actually looks like a real person. Such a new format makes it possible to take up different perspectives and give the viewer an individual experience.
However, making the news in this way tangible has a much greater effect than just transmitting news. By presenting the program within a private environment, a completely new connection to the presenter and the facts is created.

And the feedback of the visitors to the project was overwhelming. Volucap is proud to have created, together with the tagesschau, a worldwide unique case that not only demonstrates the usefulness of new technologies in the news field, but also paves the way for future news broadcasts.

PRODUCTION

Together we have created a unique experience. Concepts and ideas were developed in close cooperation between the tagesschau and Volucap. The initial app for iPad was developed by AppsFactory.

Behind the Scenes

Take a look behind the scenes of the pioneering volumetric production for tagesschau 2025. It took place in Volucap’s state-of-the-art volumetric capture studio right within the facilities of Studio Babelsberg.

2019 – AUGMENTED REALITY PREMIERE

For the first time, visitors at the IFA 2019 were able to experience how news can be presented more excitingly and experienced within their own four walls using new technologies. Around 700 people every day watched the program on 20 iPads simultaneously at the IFA. It is imperative that the tagesschau preserves its serious and trustworthy image. For the first time in its 67-year history, viewers can watch the news in augmented reality.

2020 – MIXED REALITY

Mixed Reality enables a completely new emotionality of content. Thanks to our tracking procedures, eye contact can be maintained even when viewing positions change. For the sales launch of the new NREAL Mixed Reality glasses in Germany, the APP was newly developed by Volucap and pre-installed on all devices. Every NREAL eyewear purchased in Germany includes the tagesschau 2025.
