He is one of the last Jewish survivors of the Holocaust: Ernst Grube. The story of the Munich native has now been immortalized in Babelsberg. The UFA has recorded the short film “Ernst Grube – The Legacy” in the volumetric studio. In the contemporary witness interview, which was filmed in August in the “Volucap”, Grube reports on his experiences in National Socialist Germany and his imprisonment in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. The video material is to be edited by the end of this year and the “walk-in film” produced using virtual reality is to be made available free of charge to schools, memorials and other institutions from 2020.
The Brandenburg Ministry of Economics is supporting the production of the short film with lottery funds of up to 40,000 euros. “By thematizing the Holocaust using new forms of media presentation, this VR project makes an important contribution to the German and European culture of remembrance,” explained Minister of Economics Jörg Steinbach (SPD). The short film serves the enlightenment, history and knowledge transfer. VR technology enables a far more impressive form of media communication than would be possible with classical film. “This film not only preserves historical knowledge, it also specifically addresses younger generations with their media viewing habits – young people are already very familiar with virtual reality,” says Steinbach.
