VR FILM “Aufwind” Launches in Essen
Potsdam, 22. November: Aufwind, the innovative VR film that combines historical storytelling with state-of-the-art technology, is now available to experience in Essen. Created in collaboration with Volucap and NEONREAL, the film brings the inspiring story of Charlotte Möhring and Melli Beese – Germany’s first female pilots – to life. Using Volucap’s cutting-edge volumetric capture technology, Aufwind immerses viewers in the early 1900s, allowing them to relive a pivotal moment in aviation history.
The story centers on Charlotte Möhring and Melli Beese, the first two German women to earn their pilot licenses in 1912. Determined to make their mark in the male-dominated aviation industry, they faced skepticism and resistance from many men. Despite the challenges, Charlotte and Melli courageously fought for their independence, becoming pioneers in the early history of flight. Their perseverance and courage continue to inspire to this day.
To authentically recreate this historical narrative, Volucap brought the actors into 3D through volumetric capture, a technology that records every movement and emotion in three dimensions. This innovative approach enables viewers to feel as if they are standing alongside the actors, experiencing the story as if they were part of the scene.
In addition to the visual storytelling, Aufwind incorporates multisensory elements such as vibrations, wind, heat, cold, and even scents. A “Motion Seat” equipped with a steering wheel allows participants to control vehicles and airplanes, further immersing them in the narrative. This combination of storytelling and interactivity represents a new frontier in filmmaking.
Aufwind has already garnered international acclaim, including a nomination at La Biennale di Venezia 2023. Its availability in Essen offers a unique opportunity for audiences to engage with history in an entirely new way.
